Lot 559: A Collection of UK and World Coins and Commemorative Issues
A collection of UK and world coins and commemorative medals. The collection includes a 1951 Festival of Britain crown housed in its original maroon presentation box with an accompanying descriptive pamphlet, the box lid printed in gold with a crest and the text FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN 1951. Also included is a 1983 UK one pound coin set in a blue presentation card printed in gold with UNITED KINGDOM ONE POUND COIN FIRST DAY OF ISSUE 21st APRIL 1983, accompanied by a white envelope. Commemorative issues feature a cased 1965 Winston Churchill crown, the case printed SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL COMMEMORATIVE CROWN 1874 1965, and a 1977 Silver Jubilee medal in a plastic case printed H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH II COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL SILVER JUBILEE 1952 1977. Three 1972 Silver Wedding Anniversary crowns are present in blue plastic pouches reading ELIZABETH AND PHILIP 20 NOVEMBER 1947-1972. Decimal commemorative coins include 1973 EEC joined hands 50p pieces, a 1996 Football two pound coin, and a 2007 Act of Union two pound coin. The bulk of the group consists of pre-decimal UK currency including Victorian, Edwardian, George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II bronze pennies and halfpennies, a significant quantity of brass dodecagonal threepences with visible dates including 1960 and 1961, and piles of cupro-nickel sixpences, shillings, florins, and half-crowns. World coinage is represented by a 1944 US Lincoln penny, a 1982 US Washington quarter, a 1937 French one franc coin with the obverse reading REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE 1937 P.TURIN, and a 1915 Swedish coin inscribed MED FOLKET FOR FOSTERLANDET 1915. A black circular token or lead piece is present, stamped F GILLIES.
