Lot 560: A Collection of UK Silver and Cupro-Nickel Sixpence and Threepence Coins
A collection of UK pre-decimal coinage spanning the reigns of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, and King George VI. The lot comprises silver and cupro-nickel sixpence and threepence denominations. Reverse designs observed include the oak sprig and acorn motif for George V sixpences, the crowned Royal Cypher for George VI sixpences, the crowned numeral 3 within a wreath for Victorian and early 20th-century threepences, and the shield upon a Tudor rose for George VI silver threepences.
Obverse profile portraits are accompanied by legends including VICTORIA D G BRITT REGINA F D, EDWARDVS VII D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP, GEORGIVS V D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP, and GEORGIVS VI D G BR OMN REX. Issues produced from 1949 onwards omit the IND IMP title. Legible dates across the collection include 1901, 1902, 1911, 1919, 1920, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, and 1951.
The metal composition of the coins varies according to their date of issue, encompassing sterling silver (.925) for pre-1920 examples, 50 percent silver (.500) for issues between 1920 and 1946, and cupro-nickel for examples dated 1947 and later.
