Lot 593: A pair of Japanese cloisonne enamel thousand butterfly vases late Meiji period 27cm Tall
A pair of Japanese cloisonne enamel vases dating to the late Meiji period. The baluster form vases are decorated in the shippo technique with a dense millefleur and thousand butterfly pattern against a black ground. The decoration is interspersed with various lobed and fan-shaped cartouches containing motifs of birds, flowers, and landscapes rendered in polychrome enamels. The reddish-brown enamelled sections feature aventurine or gold-stone inclusions. The vases are finished with metal rims at the mouth and foot, and the interiors are enamelled in a deep blue. The bases are finished in plain patinated metal and bear no visible maker marks, signatures, or inscriptions.
