Lot 642: A pair of H. Webster illustrative watercolors of a seated lady and the Princess and the Pea
A pair of watercolor and gouache paintings on paper in a romantic illustrative style. The first work depicts a young woman with a bobbed haircut wearing a 1920s style blue dress with lace collar and matching blue heels, seated on a white sofa beside two balloons. A signature in blue-grey paint is applied to the lower right corner reading WEBSTER preceded by a vertical stroke appearing to be the initial H. The second work depicts the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, showing a girl in a white nightgown stretching on a high stack of colourful patterned mattresses and quilts beneath a tall carved bedpost. This work is signed H. WEBSTER in the lower left corner. Both pieces are housed in matching modern grey-finished wooden frames with gilt inner lips and tan mounts. The paper shows uniform mild toning consistent with age.
