Lot 170: Arts and Crafts Style Figural Sculpture of a Cowled Figure with Offering Bowl 27cm tall
An Arts and Crafts style earthenware figural sculpture depicting a standing figure in medieval-inspired dress. The figure is modeled wearing a cowled hood and a cloak with a decorative collar over long robes, standing with eyes closed in a serene expression. The hands support an elongated shallow bowl containing small, red-pigmented spherical objects representing fruit or flowers. The piece is constructed from hollow-cast terracotta with a textured slip-decorated surface. The exterior is finished with a dark brown wood-effect pigment, featuring pale pigment highlights to the face and hands and traces of gilding on the collar. The interior, visible at the base, shows the natural reddish-buff colour of the fired clay. An incised symbol resembling a pair of shears is present on the front of the lower robe. The underside of the base features faint, hand-incised marks including what appears to be a stylized monogram or initials and several vertical and diagonal lines, though these marks are not clearly legible as a name or specific maker.
