Lot 171: Large ceramic Marmite 16oz display jar with metal lid

A large glazed ceramic promotional display jar modelled on the iconic Marmite food extract container. The bulbous body is finished in a deep brown glaze and features embossed lettering to the shoulder reading 16 OZ MARMITE. The front of the jar bears a large circular paper label with a yellow ground, printed with the Marmite logo in a red banner, the words VEGETABLE-YEAST and FOOD EXTRACT, and an illustration of a traditional Marmite cooking pot. The lower border of the label is printed with MARMITE FOOD EXTRACT CO. LTD. WALSINGHAM HOUSE, LONDON, E.C.3. along with the grades Grade and Dark in flanking scrolls.

The jar is fitted with a yellow lithographed metal screw-top lid. The lid is printed with a smaller version of the Marmite logo and detailed serving and kitchen instructions in red and black text, including the caution TOO MUCH SPOILS THE FLAVOUR in a red semi-circle at the base. The underside of the jar has a recessed, glazed centre and an unglazed foot ring.
