Lot 273: An antique mahogany-cased analytical balance and fitted weight box

An antique mahogany-cased analytical balance with an accompanying weight set. The instrument is housed within a rectangular mahogany frame featuring glass panels to the top and all four sides. The base of the case is fitted with a single full-width drawer featuring a turned wooden knob, and the entire unit is supported on four adjustable brass knurled leveling feet. The internal mechanism consists of a central turned brass pillar supporting a steel equal-arm beam. A vertical pointer at the top of the pillar aligns with a curved white scale plate featuring black graduated markings. Wire hangers with hooks are suspended from the beam ends, though these are currently disconnected from the two circular metal pans resting on the mahogany base.

The separate fitted mahogany weight box features a brass swing-latch. Its interior contains a partial set of brass weights with knob tops and a collection of fractional milligram foil weights protected by a glass slide. One square foil weight is stamped 500 mg, while others bear legible numerical values of 200, 100, and 50. A pair of metal tweezers is located in a dedicated slot at the front of the box. The drawer in the balance case contains several circular filter papers, a small circular wooden pill-type box, and a wooden-handled tool. No manufacturer name or trademark is legible on the beam, pillar, or case.
