Lot 320: An Assortment of Antique Brass Apothecary and Troy Weights Including Avery

A large collection of antique apothecary and chemical balance weights, primarily of British manufacture in brass and bronze. The group features eight cylindrical knobbed weights, including a large example stamped AVERY 10 OZ APOTH, alongside others marked APOTH 8 OZ AVERY, APOTH 6 OZ, and APOTH 4 OZ. A distinctive stepped brass weight with a white metal base is also present. The assortment contains numerous flat tablet weights in square, rectangular, and octagonal forms. Visible inscriptions on these pieces include 4 DRACHMS, 2 DRACHMS, 1 DRACHM, 2 SCRUPLES, 1 SCRUPLE, and 40 GRAINS. Several weights bear the mark W. & T. AVERY or AVERY, and the apothecary symbols for drachm (ʒ) and scruple (℈) are frequently used, including one marked ʒij and a cast cubic weight marked ʒi. The collection further includes circular disc weights, two of which are marked 1/2 OZ AVERY and one 10 g. A series of thin foil grain weights are present, with denominations including 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 GRAINS. Occasional metric foil weights are included, marked 200 mg and 500 mg.
