Lot 327: A Collection of Medical Pharmacopoeias, Local Directories and a 1921 Commercial Ledger

A collection of antiquarian books, medical texts, and regional ephemera primarily associated with Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Tynemouth. The group features a large, distressed leather-bound ledger containing numerous tipped-in commercial invoices and receipts dated to 1921. These documents are addressed to Messrs Williamson and Hogg, Chemists, 102 Bedford Street, North Shields. Notable company letterheads within the ledger include Cadbury Brothers Ltd of Bournville, Bovril Limited, Virol Limited, G.B. Kent and Sons Ltd, Brady and Martin Ltd, and Ayrton Saunders and Co Ltd. The invoices detail orders for pharmaceutical supplies, surgical instruments, and consumer goods such as cocoa and invalid foods.

The collection includes several editions of The Extra Pharmacopoeia by Martindale and Westcott, specifically the Fourteenth Edition, Eighteenth Edition Volume II, and a Twenty-Third Edition Volume II dated 1955. Other medical volumes comprise The Pocket Formulary and Synopsis of the British and Foreign Pharmacopoeias by Henry Beasley, Eleventh Edition, published by J. and A. Churchill, London, 1886; The Formulary of the Tynemouth Panel Committee; and the Newcastle Insurance Pharmacopoeia.

Regional interest items include Whitehead’s Newcastle and Gatehead Directory for 1790, a later reprint published by D. Akenhead, and the City and County of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Corporation Manual 1903-04. Also present is The Royal Pocket Book for 1859, published by John Renshaw, London, featuring an engraved frontispiece of Constantinople and housed in a flexible leather wallet-style binding with a wrap-around flap. The lot is completed by a copy of Blackwood’s Magazine from October 1976.
