Lot 336: A British Brass and Steel Flame Safety Miner Lamp

A flame safety miner lamp, featuring a cylindrical steel bonnet and a brass fuel reservoir base. The upper section consists of a tinned or leaded steel chimney with a series of punched circular ventilation holes around the top and a domed cap, fitted with a heavy-gauge iron suspension hook. The central section comprises five vertical steel bars protecting a thick cylindrical glass sleeve. A mechanical locking mechanism is fitted to the side of the brass base, intended to prevent the lamp from being opened in a hazardous environment. The steel bonnet bears the stamped characters 7 and a stylized 4 (photo 4). The glass sleeve features an etched mark in a shield-shaped outline, which reads W E B in an arc above the word BRITISH (photo 7). The underside of the brass reservoir is fitted with a recessed cross-head filler cap (photo 6). The internal burner assembly with a wick remains present within the glass chamber.
