Lot 341: A mid-20th century Avery fan-style retail counter scale

A vintage fan-style retail counter scale manufactured in England. The instrument features a cast metal body finished in white vitreous enamel with green painted accents along the housing edges. The front of the fan housing features a glazed weight dial graduated from 0 to 2 LB, with the central inscription: CHART MARKED BY 1/4 OZ. DIVISIONS. TO WEIGH 2 LB. MADE IN ENGLAND BY W&T AVERY LTD. BIRMINGHAM. NO 1105 CCE/. The operator side contains a comprehensive price-computing chart printed on paper, showing a grid of calculated values with price increments including 2 1/2, 3, and 3 1/2. Printed text on this chart includes SH REGD NO 855,857 and 1105CCE 5287, with the instruction READ ONLY THE VALUES INDICATED BY RED LINE. Both sides of the neck are mounted with a circular green medallion bearing a chrome-finished raised mark reading AVERY above a stylized monogram. The scale is equipped with a removable stainless steel scoop-style weighing pan held by a three-arm metal cradle, a integrated spirit level bubble, and adjustable leveling feet at the base.
