Lot 348: A Prestwich Patent Type SL Miner's Safety Lamp by The Protector Lamp and Lighting Co. Ltd

A miner’s flame safety lamp constructed with a cylindrical steel bonnet and a brass lower section comprising the reservoir and cage. The upper portion features a heavy iron hanging hook attached to a circular cap with ten rivets. The glass combustion chamber is held within a brass cage supported by five vertical pillars. A brass maker’s plate is riveted to the bonnet, reading THE PROTECTOR LAMP & LIGHTING Co. LTD, TYPE SL, PRESTWICH’S PATENT, PROTECTOR, APPROVED UNDER LIGHTING SCHEDULE B, MAKERS, ECCLES MANCHESTER. The number 87 is stamped into the centre of this plate. A rectangular metal tally stamped with the numeral 8 is attached to the magnetic locking mechanism at the base, and the same number 8 is stamped into the adjacent brass body. The lower brass reservoir is stamped PRESTWICH’S PATENT and 59/1462. The glass cylinder bears an etched inscription 59/1462 and partial text reading PYR. The underside of the brass base features a four-pronged adjustment screw and a single incised checkmark or numeral 7.
