Lot 685: Two Indian Copper and Brass Lidded Betel Paan Boxes
Two Indian hand-forged circular metal vessels comprising one larger tinned copper box and one smaller brass box, both featuring hinged domed covers. The larger tinned copper box is decorated with an intricate scheme of hand-engraved scrolling foliate designs, teardrop motifs, and geometric borders accented with pointillé work. Its interior retains a silver-coloured tinned finish. The smaller brass vessel features simpler incised concentric banding. Both pieces are constructed with heavy-gauge metal plates, riveted hardware, and hand-forged chain-linked hinges. The larger box features a single fixed handle while the smaller brass box is fitted with a braided-style swing handle. The interior of both lids shows the hand-hammered rivet plates used to secure the exterior hardware. No maker’s marks or signatures are present on either item.
