Lot 80: A 19th Century Scottish Ram Horn Snuff Mull with Silver Tone Thistle Motif and Andrew McIntosh Engraving
A Scottish snuff mull constructed from a naturally curled ram horn (Ovis aries) that has been polished to a dark brown and black finish, showing lighter translucent amber striations toward the open end (photo 1). The horn tapers to a decorative tight spiral at the terminal. The vessel is fitted with a hinged lid and a wide metal collar. The lid is set with a circular piece of polished horn and features an applied silver-tone motif depicting a Scottish thistle and acanthus-style leaves (photo 3). The metal collar is engraved with a name in copperplate cursive script (photos 4, 5, and 6). The interior of the lid is lined with a cork or wooden stopper (photo 7).
