Lot 196: A cast metal Lord Ganesha idol seated on a rat supported throne with ornate prabhavali 30x27cm
A cast metal, likely brass or bronze, figural representation of the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha. The deity is depicted seated in Lalitasana on a tiered circular pedestal, set within a detachable decorative scrolling arch known as a prabhavali. Ganesha is shown with four arms holding traditional attributes, including an axe (parashu) and a noose (pasha); the lower right hand is held in the abhaya mudra of protection, while the lower left hand holds a sweetmeat (modak). The figure is adorned with an elaborate crown, traditional jewellery, and a sacred thread.
The reverse of the figure features a separate chakra or sun-disk ornament attached behind the head. The base is supported by four zoomorphic feet in the form of rats (mushika), which serve as the deity’s traditional vahana or vehicle. The underside of the base shows that the prabhavali is secured using two modern-style threaded bolts with washers. The piece features a dark, aged patina throughout.
