Lot 197: A Pair of Cast Bronze Relief Elephant Temple Bells

A pair of cast bronze ritual temple bells. Each bell is decorated with a relief frieze around the lower waist depicting a procession of walking elephants. The bells are surmounted by ornate handles formed of four stylized mythical figures supporting a circular suspension loop. The interior of each bell contains an original clapper suspended by a wire loop. The surfaces are finished with a dark, aged patina showing significant natural verdigris and oxidation to both the exterior and interior surfaces. The casting displays surface pitting and structural wear to the loops and clapper attachments consistent with age and traditional sand-casting techniques.
