Lot 402: Victorian Mahogany and Ash Captains Chair with Restored Cane Seat

A Victorian provincial armchair of the smoker’s bow or captain’s chair form. The construction features a heavy U-shaped steam-bent top rail supported by a series of ring-turned spindles and a central pierced splat. The splat is decorated with a carved wheel or star motif. The solid wood seat frame is inset with a panel of hand-woven cane. The chair stands on splayed, ring-turned legs joined by an H-stretcher. The underside reveals the hand-woven nature of the caning process with individual threading holes. The timber is finished in a dark stain.
