Lot 566: A Trio of Mason’s Ironstone Applique Pattern Octagonal Jugs
A trio of graduated English ironstone jugs in the Applique pattern. Each vessel features an octagonal form with transfer-printed and hand-painted polychrome decoration in the Imari style. The design consists of irregular patchwork panels containing geometric diapers, floral sprays with orange blossoms, scrolling foliage, and traditional blue and white patterns. These panels are defined by thick hand-painted gilded borders, with further gilding applied to the rims and handles.
The set includes three distinct forms: a large jug with a straight-sided body and angular handle; a medium jug with a flaring wavy rim and curved thumb-rest handle; and a small jug with a bulbous lower section and scrolling handle.
The underside of each piece bears a blue underglaze printed mark consisting of the name MASONS in an arch above a crown, with a banner below reading IRONSTONE MADE IN ENGLAND. A registered trademark symbol is positioned to the right of the crown. The pattern name Applique is printed in script with a copyright symbol, above the words PRINTED AND HAND PAINTED. Small hand-painted marks in red and gold are also present on the bases.
