Lot 696: A Collection of Victorian Silver Plated Tableware, Topographical Engravings, and Metalware
A group of late 19th-century silver-plated hollowware, topographical prints, and miscellaneous antique metalwork. The silver-plated collection consists of three matching pieces of tableware featuring engraved foliate and scroll decoration around central cartouches. This set comprises a tall tapered cylindrical hot water or coffee pot with a hinged lid and high-arched handle, a lower-profile cylindrical teapot with a hinged lid, and an open twin-handled sugar bowl. The base of the hollowware bears several struck marks in three rows: the top row is impressed with a dot followed by 4 H P N S; the middle row features four characters in individual shield-shaped punches, of which D & S are legible in an Old English style; the bottom row is struck with the numerals 9 4 8 3.
The lot includes two framed hand-coloured topographical engravings. The first is titled STOCKTON ON TEES in the lower margin and is inscribed with the names T. Allom and W. Floyd. It is presented in a black and gilt frame with a multi-lined mount. The second print is titled HARTLEPOOL and is inscribed Painted by T. Creswick from a sketch by G. Balmer. This is held within a wood and gilt frame.
Miscellaneous metalware includes a heavy circular brass or bronze disc with a scuffed and indented surface. An ornamental wrought iron stand with scrollwork and a copper-toned floral element is mounted to an oak base. Accompanying these is a long wrought iron fire tool featuring a wooden ball handle and a coiled wire grip.
