Lot 709: A Themed Figural Metal Chess Set with Wooden Board

A set of thirty-two themed cast metal chessmen featuring a Classical Antiquity motif, presented with an associated wooden board. The set is divided into two distinct finishes: one group featuring a verdigris blue-green patination with gilt-style highlights, and a second group with a darkened bronze-style finish and similar gilt accents. The pieces are cast in figural forms representing various mythological and historical figures of ancient Greece or Rome. The Kings are depicted as standing male figures in draped robes or togas, while the Queens are standing female figures in classical dress. The Bishops are represented by standing soldiers wearing capes and helmets, and the Knights take the form of rearing horses. The Rooks are modelled as fluted Corinthian or Ionic-style architectural columns. The Pawns are depicted as soldiers in hoplite-style armour, each equipped with a round shield and a long spear. The spears are constructed from thin metal rods inserted into the hands of the figures. The accompanying wooden board features an inlaid playing surface of alternating light and dark wood squares, set within a mitred wooden frame. No manufacturer marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the pieces or the board.
