Lot 711: Victorian Burr Walnut and Brass Bound Writing Slope
A Victorian writing slope of rectangular form, constructed with a highly figured burr walnut veneer. The exterior features campaign-style brass strapping, flush-fitting corner mounts, and ebonised stringing. The hinged lid is decorated with a central brass foliate-scroll inlay set into an ebonised quatrefoil-shaped ground. This decorative motif is repeated on the front of the box, where an identical brass and ebonised inlay serves as an escutcheon for the lock. The case is supported on four turned ebonised bun feet. The interior is lined with mahogany but is currently devoid of its original writing surface, inkwell compartments, and internal fold-out desk mechanism. The brass hinges and lock mechanism appear original to the piece.
